"In the News" Summary for Wednesday, January 21st:

Hello!

Dang, I have been busy on this news project.  I just keep thinking of more things to add and new ways to improve the Facebook page and this blog.

I posted yesterday on the Facebook page what I have been learning about how the news seems to work as a business.  It turns out that the "news" isn't very mysterious.  Many of the stories on the t.v. news and in the newspapers come from the Associated Press, and that is why they are all so much the same.  News outlets take their information, put on their own logo, sign their own names and then post or print that information for their newspaper or t.v. news.  They have the choice to fill in more details, or to just relay what they receive from the AP.  *Link to the 2012 Conan O'Brien's message about local t.v. stations buying identical news".

Newspapers and t.v. stations also have their own reporters who work on their own exclusive stories.  The newspapers have more time to plan things out, and therefore seem to have many more of these types of news stories.  Others share those stories.  They must have a deal with the newspapers, because I don't notice that most of these stories list their sources, but then I read a newspaper headline, and it was written by someone at the paper.  All of this makes the AP a news junkie's go to place: Associated Press for Oregon website.

Also, because I have expanded my coverage area of news stories, I made some changes to the cover picture on the Facebook page.  As far as our local news, I will not be duplicating their original content (where their reporters go out on a story) because I am concentrating on stories that we might not otherwise hear about.

To make things easier on my Facebook page,  I made a page break for each day.  I will add it each morning for the day before.   This is what they look like:

I have added to the links on the sidebar, so please take a look when you have a chance. Thanks for all of you interest, and please give that page a like if you haven't yet.
