"In the News": Summary for Thursday, January 22, 2015:

 "Growing Pains"

Hi,

Well, I guess that I post too frequently for some on my "In the News" Facebook page.  I have lost four followers since yesterday morning, and one wrote to tell me why.

If you feel as if you are being spammed with posts, but still would like to read them at your leisure, the easiest thing to do is to turn off your notifications.  You could also "unfollow" me, but please don't "unlike" me, unless you really don't enjoy the page.

I know that I have changed the direction of this news project since I began three weeks ago tomorrow.  This is still an experiment, and I am going with where it is leading me.  I don't believe that we should be spoon-fed the news, and if I see something, especially about Oregon, I am going to continue posting on this one-stop-shop.

Thank you for all of thumbs up and kind comments, I appreciate you, and I work for praise.  ~ Kathy M.

Thank you so much to Teri Myers for sharing her hot-off-the press news report about yesterday's "5 for 5" meeting at the Grange Hall in La Pine:

(You can click on the letter above to enlarge it it for easier viewing.)

Here is the stuff that I heard on the scanner yesterday.  The most recent posts are first (that way I didn't have to retype everything).  I am sure that there was a lot more that happened after I turned it off.

2:59 p.m. - Maston Trailhead, complaint called in. A woman is waiting for her husband now, the police said.

6:25 p.m. - Somebody driving a 90's white Ford Explorer seems full of road rage and the cops have been notified. (Not exactly sure where this is.)

6:10 p.m. - La Pine - It sounds like a woman has died at home, off of Burgess. That is so sad. Sending out prayers for her family and friends.

5:06 - p.m. - La Pine - Heath Drive and Huntington - A highly intoxicated couple; the man called the cops because he is worried about the woman ... If I got this one right.

4:52 p.m. - Bend - "There's a pig on the loose!" Something about at a car dealership location.

4:11 p.m. - Something is going on at Sunrise and Rainbow. An "Alpha" was requested to respond. I'm not sure what that means though.

There have been many traffic stops in the La Pine area over the past hour.

2:59 p.m. - Maston Trailhead, complaint called in. A woman is waiting for her husband now, the police said.

2:49 p.m. - La Pine - There is an unconscious subject at the Highlander Motel. An elderly woman was found sitting in her chair.

11:30 a.m to 11:54 a.m. - The cops have been chasing a red Chevy PU on HWY 97 for a while now.

11:52 a.m. - EMS has been dispatched to the La Pine Community Health Center for somebody having a heart problem.

11:34 a.m. - La Pine - somebody on Elderberry Ln. fell and called for help.

11:13 a.m. - Bend - A white Audi is blocking the driveway entrance to Planned Parenthood and there are quite a few protesters out today.  Today is the Roe vs Wade anniversary.

To sum up the things that I have heard this morning, there was a reckless driving white sedan passing people at a high rate of speed beginning at the High Desert Museum going towards Bend (9:40). There was another call regarding the same type of behavior a few minutes later at Cooley Rd., but this car was going southbound so I don't know if it was the same one.

"In the News" Summary for Wednesday, January 21st:

Hello!

Dang, I have been busy on this news project.  I just keep thinking of more things to add and new ways to improve the Facebook page and this blog.

I posted yesterday on the Facebook page what I have been learning about how the news seems to work as a business.  It turns out that the "news" isn't very mysterious.  Many of the stories on the t.v. news and in the newspapers come from the Associated Press, and that is why they are all so much the same.  News outlets take their information, put on their own logo, sign their own names and then post or print that information for their newspaper or t.v. news.  They have the choice to fill in more details, or to just relay what they receive from the AP.  *Link to the 2012 Conan O'Brien's message about local t.v. stations buying identical news".

Newspapers and t.v. stations also have their own reporters who work on their own exclusive stories.  The newspapers have more time to plan things out, and therefore seem to have many more of these types of news stories.  Others share those stories.  They must have a deal with the newspapers, because I don't notice that most of these stories list their sources, but then I read a newspaper headline, and it was written by someone at the paper.  All of this makes the AP a news junkie's go to place: Associated Press for Oregon website.

Also, because I have expanded my coverage area of news stories, I made some changes to the cover picture on the Facebook page.  As far as our local news, I will not be duplicating their original content (where their reporters go out on a story) because I am concentrating on stories that we might not otherwise hear about.

To make things easier on my Facebook page,  I made a page break for each day.  I will add it each morning for the day before.   This is what they look like:

I have added to the links on the sidebar, so please take a look when you have a chance. Thanks for all of you interest, and please give that page a like if you haven't yet.

Here is the stuff that I heard on the scanner yesterday.  The most recent posts are first (that way I didn't have to retype everything).  I am sure that there was a lot more that happened after I turned it off.

"In the News" - Summary for Tues., January 20th:

Hi!

I don't think that I will try and transfer everything over this morning.  There was just too much news from other folks websites.

There are a few things that I want to put on here though.

Measles are back in the news.  A man in Lane County who attended the Super Bowl has just broken out with them.  The incubation period is nine days, so who knows where this is going to lead.

On Monday, a woman who was visiting Sunriver from Washington and her friend brought some THC infused candy with them.  She ate three of them and pretty much overdosed.  Her friends were very worried and called 9-1-1.  She is okay, and her friend got fined.

This morning, I learned what happened at Juniper Swim Center in Bend on Friday.  Erik Cardone, a 29 year-old male lifeguard/water polo coach died of  "a medical emergency".  An investigation is ongoing and the detectives are awaiting the autopsy report.

On Monday night in Klamath Falls, Zachery Craig, age 24, is suspected of murdering 49-year-old Clinton Black.  Craig was on the run, but it looks like he was arrested last night at 9:30 p.m.  Craig was cleared as a person of interest, but they had something else on him.

This is the guy that is being charged for murder of Black, Joseph E. Woodward:

These people are missing:

I don't have a scanner report today, but I will update the police and emergency logs.

Also, I worked pretty hard on adding more links to the sidebar on this blog.  And, beginning tomorrow, I am going to add the day of the page breaks to the Facebook page so it will be easier to read it.  They will look like the little picture below:

"In the News" - Summary for Monday, January 19th:

Good Morning!

Okay, here is the deal. Facebook shows me how many people have looked at each post. 15 people looked at the big announcement that today was Martin Luther King Day. 213 of you looked at the story about Wendy's closing in the valley. 373 people viewed yesterday's post about the I-84 accident. That said, I only have 276 followers, so more people might be looking at this news page experiment than I originally thought.

I have decided add to my focus area. I am still going to bring you all the latest that I can find for Southern Deschutes County and Northern Klamath County, but also add stories from around the Pacific Northwest. How am I going to choose which stories? Well, until I figure out what I am doing, I guess if I think that it will interest most of you guys then I will try and post it.

Thanks so much for tuning in and giving me your positive feedback.

~ Kathy M.

High Desert Museum Opens it's Doors

Has it been awhile since you have taken the kids to the High Desert Museum? You can go for free this Saturday, January 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Here is the link to the museum's website for the details:  Link to the High Desert Museums Family Free Day Page

Here are some pretty pictures that I took at the museum in 2010:

Forest Closures Begin in January:

My Central Oregon.com has the best article that I have read yet about the outdoor recreation closures that begin this month in our area.  These closures are due to the nesting locations of some endangered species of birds.  If you are found near the nesting sites, you can be fined $1,000.

Here is the official news release from the BLM Prineville Office.

Fences and Doghouses for
                    Dogs in Central Oregon:

“We think this goal is very achievable, considering the fact that in 2014, we unchained 56 dogs from Warm Springs to Prineville and down to La Pine,” says La Donna Sullivan, Fences For Fido’s Central Oregon director. “Our organization helped pass this law, and we want to do our best to help the people of Central Oregon comply and do right by the pets we know they love.”

Here is the Oregon Statue and the rules on how long you can keep your dog tied up and bedding requirements.  Fines are steep.
